What Can You Visit on a Stay in Sibiu?
About Sibiu, Ocna Sibiului, Porumbacu de Jos
In the heart of Transylvania, Sibiu is among the most beautiful cities in the whole of Romania, visited every year by very many tourists.
The city stands out for its medieval architecture, being one of the 7 Saxon cities in our country.
In terms of style, Sibiu resembles an Austrian city, with Saxon influences standing out.
Let us not forget that Sibiu became European Capital of Culture in 2007. In the city centre, in Piața Mare (the Large Square), we can see numerous historic monuments and buildings dating from as early as the 15th century.
Also right next to the Large Square we find the Roman Catholic Church, built between 1726 and 1733. Today the church is visited by Romanians as well as Germans and Hungarians.
In Sibiu we can also visit the Brukenthal Museum, which belonged to Baron Samuel von Brukenthal. The building is impressive, with its Baroque style standing out.
On the stone façade you can still see the old symbol of the Brukenthal family.
It is worth knowing that the Brukenthal Museum is the oldest in our country. Much of the art comes from the baron’s own personal collection.
In the west of the city we find the History Museum, a building that once served as the town hall. Its impressive architecture stands out, with Renaissance and Gothic influences.
The Council Tower is certainly one of the main tourist attractions in Sibiu. It was raised in the 13th century and links the Large Square with the Small Square.
Its name comes from the simple fact that it stands right next to the town hall. Although it was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1586, the Council Tower was rebuilt 2 years later.
One of the most beautiful buildings in Sibiu is the Arts House (Casa Artelor), in the Small Square. It is considered the oldest structure of its kind in Transylvania.
Built as early as 1370, it was originally a guild house. Meetings took place on the upper floor, while on the ground floor there was a market.
The Evangelical Cathedral has an impressive presence and is a real point of attraction for every passer-by. With a Gothic air, the monument is over 78 m high.
And the streets of Sibiu have a special charm, for example Nicolae Bălcescu Pedestrian Street. There are also numerous shopping centres here, where we can shop.
Although it was built as early as 1942, most of the buildings here date from the 19th century.
Also in Sibiu we can visit the Astra Museum, the largest open-air museum, which has a special beauty. It has a rural setting, resembling a miniature village.
The location is as unique as can be, so if we come to the Sibiu area we should put the Astra Museum on our list of sights to visit.
In conclusion, our country has a lot to offer in terms of tourism. We have a host of sights, each more interesting than the last, such as those we find in Sibiu.
