Odorheiu Secuiesc, the second largest town in Harghita County, was first mentioned in documents in 1301, under the name Villa Olachalis. The town is crossed by the Târnava Mare and surrounded by the Harghita Mountains and the Târnava hills.

If you want to discover the attractions of Székely Land, we recommend starting with a stay in Odorheiu Secuiesc. The town has museums and historic buildings, among other things, that are important for Székely Land.

Here is what you should put on your list:

  • The Haáz Rezső Museum, a history and ethnography museum, is at 29 Kossuth Lajos Street, in a central location. It houses collections of numismatics, art, a library, weapons, natural sciences and local history and ethnography, with an inventory dating from 1797.
  • The Reformed College is a Baroque building dating from 1770.
  • The Town Hall is in an imposing historic building in an eclectic style typical of Stehl Otto.
  • The Medieval Fortress was built in 1490 and was unfortunately destroyed and rebuilt several times. For a long time the Székelys saw it as an apple of discord, which is why they destroyed it in 1599, and it became known as the Fortress Attacked by the Székelys. The Székelys were privileged to some extent in the past, with more rights than other citizens. For this reason several revolts broke out over time.
  • The Franciscan Church was built between 1721 and 1779. It is 36 metres long, 17 metres wide and 14 metres high, with 7 altars. Today the church is Roman Catholic.
  • The town centre is certainly not to be missed, a delightful boulevard that catches the eye of passers-by, curious and eager to discover old buildings, churches and statues with imposing architecture.
  • We recommend you try the local Székely dishes, which are delicious and a perfect chance to take part in a journey into the fascinating and beautiful Székely culture of Transylvania.
  • Do not miss a stroll in the Travelling Székely Memorial Park (its distinctive feature is its 13 statues representing important figures in the town’s history) or at the Seiche Baths, just 2 km from Odorheiu Secuiesc. What can you do here? On the road to Sovata, at an altitude of 504 metres, there are three mineral water springs: the Seiche Spring, the Orbán Balázs Spring and Spring No. 3.
