About Tulcea, Mahmudia, Murighiol, Enisala

The Danube Delta is certainly a priceless treasure for our country, which is why tourism in the area has developed impressively. Considered one of the wonders of the world, the nature reserve has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1991.

If you have decided to discover the beauty of the Delta, you can consider the locality of Murighiol, the largest commune in Romania, as a place to stay. Its name comes from Turkish, “muri-gol”, which translates as “the lake of ants”.

You have countless options for places to stay, with top guesthouses offering complete tourist services. In recent years it has become an important tourist destination and is, in fact, the second most important point from which trips into the Danube Delta are organised.

What are the must-see sights in the Murighiol area?

Halmyris Citadel, on the right bank of the Sfântu Gheorghe arm, dates back to the 2nd century AD and was one of the most important stations of the Danube fleet. A century later it became one of the most important centres of Christianity. The citadel gained its fame after a 15 August when a crypt that had been unknown until then was brought to light, where the remains of two local martyrs were found: Epictetus the priest and Astion the monk (they were persecuted for their faith and beheaded in the year 290). The discovery was made possible by an inscription in Greek on one of the crypt’s walls.

Halmyris Monastery is right next to the citadel of the same name and was in fact discovered among its ruins. The place of worship holds the oldest relics on the territory of our country. In fact, the way in which they were found is considered a miracle, because they practically came to light on their own, on the feast day of the Mother of God, 15 August.

The Sărătura I, II and III nature reserve lakes are also among the top attractions in the area, where spa tourism has developed strongly thanks to the mud with therapeutic properties. Lake Sărătura III was declared a nature reserve of biological interest.

What else can you do in the area?

  • Boat trips in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (the best way to enjoy the Delta in all its splendour)
  • Sport fishing
  • Walks... on dry land. That is because there are spectacular areas that can be explored on foot or by bike 😊

To make your stay in the Delta perfect, we recommend trying the traditional fish recipes, prepared in thousands of ways: storceag (the queen of fishermen’s soups), malasolka (one of the oldest recipes in Dobruja), grilled herring, scordolea (a Greek recipe) and the list goes on.

Do not miss the experience of a stay in the Danube Delta!
