The cold January days tempt you to stay indoors more and treat yourself to hot drinks such as tea, hot chocolate with marshmallows and mulled wine with cinnamon. And yet, how can you feel the charm of winter beyond your room’s windows? Step out of the routine and plan a mini-holiday in the first month of 2023. Now that the holidays are over it is a perfect, less crowded period, so you can more easily and cheaply find ideal accommodation that matches your personality and wishes. We have put together a short summary of Romania’s most fascinating places and come to you with as many interesting ideas as possible.
1. Arieșeni Resort
This is located in Țara Moților, more precisely between the localities of Ștei and Câmpeni. Being at an altitude of over 950 metres, it snows in the resort almost every winter day, which means the snow cover stays constant from early December through the spring months. Most often tourists come to Arieșeni precisely because they want to enjoy winter sports.
The two slopes here (Vârtop 1 and Vârtop 2) are about 1 km long and are also fitted with a ski-lift installation.
If you do not want to ski, you can turn to sledging, snowboarding or an ATV ride.
In the immediate vicinity of the resort there are other attractions, including Bears’ Cave, Groapa Ruginoasă, the Scărișoara Glacier and Vârciorog Waterfall.

2. Rânca
Gorj County offers many ways to relax, and the mountain resort of Rânca is one of them. At the foot of Păpușa Peak the scenery is absolutely enchanting, so you can disconnect from urban stress and enjoy the relaxation you have been dreaming of for some time.
We are talking about a resort still developing, yet one that keeps the charm of nature. Accommodation units are not as numerous as on Prahova Valley, but that is beneficial, because you do not want to queue wherever you go, do you?
3. Muierilor Cave
Also in Gorj is Muierilor Cave, which was discovered as early as 1965. Did you know that it is considered the first Romanian cave fitted with a lighting system?
You can also take a few photographs in the cave, as photography is not forbidden. Formations thousands of years old are truly impressive for any visitor.
In conclusion, you have many interesting destinations even in the winter season. You only need to give yourself a few days to travel and you will not regret the decision.
