If December was truly special, the start of January looks promising too. We are already in the second month of winter, and the weather is kind to travellers eager to get away. The only question left is “Where shall we go at the beginning of the year?” Well, there are quite a few options — you only need to make time.

Here are this month’s top locations when it comes to domestic tourism.

1. Bicaz Lake

The town of Bicaz ranks among the most beautiful places in our country, and its charm comes from the variety of landforms. At the foot of the Ceahlău Mountains, Bicaz is an area you should not miss in the first month of the year.

Did you know that Izvorul Muntelui Lake is also known as Bicaz Lake? The endless stretch of water mirroring the clear sky — even reading this description you can imagine how beautiful the landscape is. The lake on the edge of the conifer forests is a true delight for tourists from everywhere.

Besides the beauty of the natural setting, in Bicaz you can also visit the Museum of History and Ethnography, which illustrates local character.

2. The Black Sea

The Black Sea is a favourite holiday destination for travel enthusiasts in any season, not only in summer.

In recent years, with global warming, the chances of seeing the Black Sea frozen have also fallen. Still, the cold breeze, uncrowded beaches and salty air should convince you to spend a few days in Constanța. What is more, you can walk along the promenade and hear the seagulls at every step.

It is worth knowing that the sea froze for a distance of 100 metres from the shore in 2012, when it was a very harsh winter with temperatures of −20 degrees. Nowadays snow and icy streets seem only a memory, don’t they?

3. Gura Humorului

We also reach the northern part of Romania, in famous Bukovina dotted with well-known attractions. Gura Humorului is a small mountain town, only a few dozen minutes from Suceava. At an altitude of 470 metres, this town is also known for its climate with therapeutic properties.

It is said that the resort is considered the “Heart of Bukovina”, illustrating traditional elements hundreds of years old. Even the accommodation units have a traditional character, blending the classic with the modern.

All that said, if you have a few free days in January, set them aside for a mini-holiday. Time is a limited resource, so you must manage it better and better and enjoy everything our country has to offer as a tourist destination.
