Holiday in Teleorman? Discover the Beauty of the Area!
In terms of geographical location, Teleorman is in the southern part of Romania, and is also part of the Muntenia folk region.
This is a county on the border with Bulgaria, separated from the neighbouring country by the Danube. On its territory you will find a multitude of historic remains, from medieval fortresses and boyar manor houses to Roman forts.
Alexandria is among the most important towns in Teleorman County, and is also the county seat.
According to historians, the town was founded in the 19th century, but archaeologists have found traces of civilisation going back to the Palaeolithic. What is more, it seems the area was continuously inhabited, even in the Daco-Roman period.
It seems that the people of Alexandria took part in most of the revolutions that took place in Wallachia.
Among the outstanding sights in the area is St Alexander Cathedral, where the ruler Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica, the founder of the town, lies at rest.
Inside the place of worship some original paintings are still preserved, on which the well-known painter Ștefan Luchian also worked.
Turnu Măgurele was in the past a very important port on the Danube meadow. The town has a rich history, as several fortresses were built here.
The first fortress was built in Roman times, in the 2nd century. A few centuries later, the fortress of Constantine the Great was built on the ruins of the former fortress.
During the reign of Mircea the Elder, a new fortress was created in place of the existing ones, to defend against the Ottoman Empire.
Parts of the walls of the medieval fortresses can still be glimpsed today. The legends are still alive, passed down from generation to generation. According to them, there is a tunnel linking the two banks of the Danube, more than 2,000 years old.
Nature is impressive in Teleorman County, where Troianu Forest is found. The Troianu Nature Reserve is in the locality of the same name and covers more than 71 hectares.
A threatened plant species grows in the forest, and here we mean the Romanian peony. Here you will also find some oak species typical of the forest-steppe area, such as the grey oak and the downy oak.
The “Dunărica” leisure centre is among the top tourist attractions in Teleorman County, because school camps and various activities for tourists are often organised here. In practice, you can take a boat trip on the Danube, go fishing or simply go hiking in a fairy-tale natural setting.
So, if you want a holiday in the peace of nature, on the bank of the Danube, then Teleorman is the perfect destination for you. You can enjoy summer days in the most pleasant setting, with family or the people dear to you.
