About Anina, Băile Herculane, Obreja, Orșova

In the south of the county, the Danube forms the natural border with Serbia, so a large part of the tourist attractions in the area are thanks to the presence of Europe’s greatest river.

Certainly among the top tourist attractions in the county and in the country are the Danube Cauldrons, the place where the Danube enters Romanian territory and where the water flows very fast (approx. 5 m / second). It is the area where the river narrows quite a lot because of the mountains (the place where the Danube is narrowest is only 230 cm). You must discover them on a boat trip, where you will be able to observe up close the best-known sights, behind which lie fascinating stories: Decebal’s Face (the largest rock sculpture in Europe); Tabula Traiana (a monument raised 2,000 years ago to mark the triumphant march of Roman troops towards Dacia); Mraconia Monastery, also known as the Underwater Monastery; Ponicova Cave or Trikule Fortress. The views you will enjoy during the boat trip are among the most beautiful and will stay with you for a long time.

In Cheile Nerei – Beușnița National Park there is also Lake Ochiul Beiului, appreciated for its intensely crystalline blue colour. There is of course also a well-known legend, according to which in these lands ruled a pasha who had a son with crystalline blue eyes. He used to hunt in the area where the lake formed, and there he fell in love with a Wallachian girl. The boy’s father ordered the girl’s killing, and the young man shed tears where he saw the horror and took his own life. In that place the famous blue lake, similar to his eyes, is said to have formed. The lake covers an area of 284 square metres, has a depth of 3.6 metres, and a curious thing is that it never freezes in the cold season.

Băile Herculane, said to be the oldest spa resort in the world, manages to attract an impressive number of tourists. Besides the historic buildings and statues worth discovering, the resort is also appreciated for its thermal springs, whose balneary value is comparable to those at Vichy or Mont-Dore. Countless conditions can be treated here: rheumatism, diseases of the locomotor system, digestive diseases, diabetes mellitus and others.

The Tunnel of Love can be quite hard to find, because the place is not marked. It lies on the railway line between the localities of Obreja and Glimboca, and was discovered by chance by a photographer.

the Cave with Bones lies near the locality of Anina and is known because here were discovered the most complete remains of 3 people who lived 34,000–36,000 years ago.

Semenic resort is greatly appreciated by lovers of winter sports, because it has several prepared slopes of different degrees of difficulty: the Giant Slalom Slope, 1,200 metres long, appreciated by advanced skiers. The resort lies at an altitude of 1,400 metres, between the Piatra Groazei and Semenic massifs.
